SAFARI PREPARATION

When booking a safari with Cape Valley Safaris use the checklist below as a starting point.  Please contact us if you have specific needs/questions on availability of items in South Africa.

The documentation needed can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

To book a safari with Cape Valley Safaris, a $1,500 U.S. deposit is necessary to confirm the hunt and hunting dates.  A contract will then be drawn up itemising the details of the safari, thereby protecting both the client and operator/agent.  A clearly written contract ensure a satisfactory understanding whereby both parties have a clear agreement as to what is and is not provided on the safari.

Upon completing the booking, a very detailed information package will be provided to the client.  This informative package covers a comprehensive equipment and clothing list, gun permit information, suggestions on caliber and bullet selection, suggested reading material and more.

Airline travel, baggage allowances and travel tips will also be included in this package.  Passport information, arrival and departure tips and C.I.T.E.S. permit requirements are covered here.  This important information has been gained from our years of experience and has proven to be a popular and useful tool for our valued clients travelling to Africa for their safari.

PAYMENT

Please note that payment can only be accepted by bank transfer or travellers cheques.

CLOTHING & PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

Hunting or hiking boots – already broken in!
Fanny pack or backpack to carry cameras & daily items you will use in the field.
Comfortable camp or tennis shoes.
Hunting shorts.  We have daily laundry service.  Camo is okay, as are dull colours such as khaki or olive.  No bright colours or white for hunting!
Long trousers . We have daily laundry service.  Camo is okay, as are dull colours such as khaki or olive.  No bright colours or white for hunting!
Medium weight hunting jacket.
Long sleeved hunting shirts.
Short sleeve hunting shirts.
Warm sweater.
Hunting hat – I prefer baseball style but whatever is comfortable (same colours as above apply).
Sunglasses.
Personal toiletries / shaving kit.
Insect repellent – bugs are not a problem but a small can is good insurance.
Lip balm – very important!
Sun block.
Dramamine – This is suggested if you are prone to car or air sickness.
Small flashlight.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS & FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Passport.
Tickets & reservations – Read reservation instructions such as early confirmation times, check-in and departure times CAREFULLY!
Cash.
Travellers checks if you are nervous about cash.
Personal checks for trophy fees/safari cost.

SHOOTING EQUIPMENT

Rifle: I suggest .270 caliber or greater.

NOTE:
Please check with your airline on requirements for travelling with firearms!
Ammunition.
Binoculars – 1 pair for each person, not just hunters. Buy/borrow a good pair of at least 8X or 10X – not the tiny compact models.
Ear plugs – For the airplane ride when you are trying to rest and for sighting in your gun.
Gun cleaner – 1 can.
Hard gun case that will lock, with your name and address on it.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS I RECOMMEND

High quality digital camera. Bring extra cards – you can always use them at a later date.
Spare batteries.
Video camera with charger and plenty of tape.
Good supply of reading material in your carry-on baggage for the long flight here or for use in camp.

ARRIVAL IN JOHANNESBURG

Clients bringing their own rifles and arriving at Johannesburg who would like to have a Johannesburg based company assist them with the import and all the relevant documentation to clear the rifle can contact Annelise Bekker at aftongh@netactive.co.za.
They are very efficient and wait for you at Johannesburg airport to assist with the process. This is especially helpful if you have only a short time before your connecting flight.  They charge $100 for their assistance.
